The 5 books that changed my life

Whether you’re 14 or 45 all of these books deserve a read. It was actually really hard for me to narrow down my list to JUST 5! On average, I read about 12-15 books a year and have focused almost solely on personal growth topics in the last 5-6 years so the margin was thin to make the cut into my LIFE CHANGING STATUS of a book that moved me to ya know..change my life 🙂

Ok let’s dive in!

#1 The Four Agreements

The reason this book is my number 1 pick is because as humans AND in such a cold, heartless, social media age, we REALLY need to get a grip on what is important to pay attention to, when to forgive, and what to know is just honestly none of our business. And this book is just that. Based on Toltec wisdom you’re taken back to How to be a Human: 101 and given tools and resources on how to limit your own self beliefs that are creating your own suffering and find joy in new experiences of freedom, true happiness, and love.

I first read this book going through my divorce 10 years ago and it helped me heal a lot of broken pieces and look forward to building a new life.

I continue to read this book once a year to remind me where I am and to break old habits that tend to creep back in. It’s only 140 pages you could read it in a solid Sunday by the fire or on the beach Saturday.

2. Get Rich, Lucky Bitch

Ok, bare with me on this one. If you’re anything like me, titles like this one might make you a little nervous and maybe immediately turn you off. But just hear me out, in Get Rich, Lucky Bitch, Denise Duffield Thomas break’s down some MAJOR human frailties and insecurities with a humor and lightheartedness that you will forget she’s showing you how to MAKE THAT MONEY!!

The lessons I took away from this book far exceeded a materialistic or shallow quality and it’s one I truly believe more people, male and female, need to read.

It gets a little hocus pocus in some areas but if you’re willing to come with an open mind I truly believe Denise will show you where you are sabotaging your income and your lifestyle, working too hard for too little, and breakdown some pretty intense money blocks we all have based on guilt, shame, or embarrassment.

This book is so good I suggest grabbing two! One for you and one for your BFF!

3. Without Rival

I can say without a doubt that Without Rival is a book that will forever stand out to me as my biggest life changing moments. I was freshly back into my spirituality and finding my footing in religion, what I believed, is there a God, and into a new bible study I just literally fell upon. And Without Rival was the book. I don’t believe anything happens by accident and I can say beyond any measure of faith God may have well just dropped this book into my hands it was such a transformative and enlightening experience. I cried A LOT. I saw the things in me I’d been burying and hiding, I saw the ways in which I am loved, I made some REALLY big decisions based on the me that came out after these 240-ish pages and whether you are a “believer” or you’re unsure or maybe you don’t believe at all, give yourself the benefit of opening up your heart to find an author that uses humor and passion to challenge you.

4. You Are A Badass

Here’s another example and a polar opposite way (if you’re comparing it to Without Rival) to really change your mindset and your whole life. I want every man, woman, and child (that can handle F bombs) to read this book. The author, Jen Sincero, dissects every bad thing you’ve ever believed to be true about yourself and replaces it with an inner badass that won’t accept anything but absolutely creating a life you love.

I have read this book but also really enjoyed the audio version because Jen is just super fun to listen to.

This book came to me at a time my business was slowing down, some might call it failing. I was struggling to remember WHY I was even chasing the dreams and goals I had on my list, and maybe at the lowest point of a super unhealthy relationship.

I cried. I laughed A TON. And I got from Jen that just because I was feeling stuck it didn’t actually mean I WAS stuck. I remembered who I was and what I wanted that was layered underneath other people’s wishes. I gave up on the idea that I had to just stick to being this one way because I just always had been. And I let go of the need to please other people to “make them happy” and made my own happiness my first priority.

I’ve given this book to my daughters and believe if I can ask you again to keep an open mind and be okay with some well placed swear words you will come away from this book a better person ready to kick some serious ass.

5. The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth

John C. Maxwell was the first personal growth/thought leader I had ever seen in person. He spoke at my first Beachbody Coach Summit that I attended and I was BLOWN away by his genuine insight for what makes us tick, what makes us breakdown, and how we can move forward. I walked away from that talk with a full notebook of scribbles as I set a new personal growth plan, learned new life lessons, and became resolute in the fact that I didn’t know how I would do it yet but I would be doing something I loved for the rest of my life and never accepting a paycheck that told me my value or how much my own time was worth.

The author of this book really helps you see how you’re holding yourself back and gives you real tools and resources to change your behaviors and your mindset to become who you are meant to be and go after the life you want to live.

One of my favorite excerpts from this book is “Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.”

John continues the quote by saying “I have come to adopt a positive life stance because I believe it gives me the best chance to succeed while putting me in the best position to help others succeed. I came to develop this mindset by way of the following thinking:

  • Life is filled with good and bad
  • Some of the good and bad I can’t control, that’s life.
  • Some of the good and bad will find me.
  • If I have a positive life stance the good and bad will become better.
  • If I have a negative life stance the good and bad will become worse.
  • Therefore, I choose a positive life stance.

To a large degree in life, you get what you expect-not always, but most of the time. So why would I want to expect the worst?”

Another book that if I were buying, I’d buy two to share one with a friend.

That’s it! I hope you find your happy, your StickToIt-tiveness, and your success by taking one step towards a better tomorrow by reading one or all of these bad boys!! Do you have an epically unreal, life altering read? Please share with us in the comments below!!!!

And please note I think I’m supposed to say if you buy from the links I’ve attached I’ll get like 25 cents from Amazon for your purchase so thanks for buying my kid a banana! 😉 xo

No Carb French Fries

K, well LOW CARB anyway!! My first thought was no way can you eat a turnip and believe it tastes like a french fry.

But my new food freedom hack says eat veggies most (green ones, not carb loaded potato ones) and the recipe says to chop this bad boy up and bake them with some seasoning so why not try it!? As I’m cutting them my eyes watered up a little and the scent reminds me to google if the turnip and the radish are related.

Baked at 425 for 45 minutes and it comes out looking like, get this, FRENCH FRIES!!! But, the taste!? Can a radish-esque looking green veggie (with 9g carbs) TASTE like a freaking carb loaded goodness like a potato (48g carbs)!? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

The answer is yes! Yes, that goofy turnip seasoned with garlic powder, parsley, and sea salt can taste like a got damn french fry!? WHAT!? MIND FREAKING BLOWN!!!

So, pin this recipe to your clean eating board and promise yourself you’ll try these this week (disclaimer I’ve had this recipe since May 2nd and just now tried it LOL)

Turnip French Fries

Parchment Paper

1 large turnips, peeled, cut into 1/2 x 4″ sticks

1 tsp. olive oil

1/4 tsp garlic powder & parsley blend

Sea salt (to taste)

1/4 tsp. black pepper

Preheat oven to 425. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Combine turnips with oil and seasonings. Toss to blend. Bake for 40-45 minutes, turning every 20, until crispy on the outside. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

How I edit my photos – a quick tutorial

Hi guys!

Editing photos is like one of my top 3 favorite things to do in my job description. I love snapping a pic and having the ability to bring it to life in 30 seconds or less and it goes from blah to transformed all right in the palm of my hands. I also love that I can be home on the couch and grab a pic from weeks ago at the beach to help give life to the words I’m trying to get across while I’m still in my PJs. : P

I could talk for hours and show you tons of before and afters or alll of my fave photo editing apps but let’s just take this one step at a time and start with my favorite go to photo editor: Snapseedimg_8277.jpg

I can’t remember if it cost money but if it did it was like a few dollars? Hands down the easiest app to grab and make the biggest impact with lots of looks and filters to do the work for you while you mess around with specific tools and learn what you like.

Here’s a photo from my camera roll as is:

Tap LOOKS then choose a filter; I love accentuate. It increases detail and saturation immediately like this:

Next up, TOOLS. From here I might choose HDR or go in and hand select things to brighten up or make more colorful but for today I just selected Drama:

I like Drama 2 and I slide up the selector tool to increase the saturation:

So you could stop there and save to your camera roll and post right to any of your social media channels! Sometimes I like to spark up the intensity and cool my photos off with the vivid cool in my iphone’s photo editing ability too:

And then I will crop it at 4:5 ratio for my Facebook and instagram feed, or 9:16 for stories.

For my Instagram feed I have an overall theme of bright, clear, high-contrasted photos so I try to keep that in mind when I edit. Every photo is treated separately because depending on where I take it the pic may be lit from behind, in a darker room, or shot directly under the sun, so I keep that in mind whenever I’m editing and try to stay close to the last few pics color themes and tones. I will be doing a blog post on how to take a good photo next, so stay tuned for that as well.

Other apps I love are BeautyPlus, Facetune, and VSCO. I’m going to show you some examples of how I use those apps in an upcoming post. I will be doing a blog post on how to take a good photo next, so stay tuned for that as well. 😉

Hope this helps, let me know in the comments if you have any questions or if you have any suggestions for future posts 🙂 always open to feedback from you guys.

xo, TJ

never follow a diet again

In the past year I’ve tried a lot of diets 😅
vegan, paleo, iifym, clean eating, vegetarian…

But do you know what I realized
NONE of them did? 🤨

me mindset
Stop the restriction mindset.

And of course, my way of dealing with that restriction once I was done with that plan was to EAT ALL THE THINGS I “couldn’t have” while I was following it.

Up until last year I would never follow a meal plan that went along with my program because I knew something about myself. I knew if I told myself I “couldn’t have chocolate or cake, or chips” that I would immediately binge on those exact things because I wouldn’t stop thinking about them the moment I said I couldn’t have them. The whole reason behind me dieting started last year because I hated my body. I was working out religiously and wanted to lose weight and see my abs so I thought I should be strict with my food. Well, honestly it worked for a while 🤷‍♀️ my abs started to pop and I was leaner than I’d been since my 20’s so everything seemed to be worth it.

UNTIL I COULDN’T DO IT ANYMORE.

The past month all of a sudden everything became an issue. I was getting anxiety around food, I was obsessed with everything about my body, I never felt like I was doing enough, and I avoided situations where I wouldn’t be in control of what foods I was eating.

I can remember being 12 and binge eating ice cream in the freezer because I was depressed about my body compared to my naturally thin best friend.

I can remember being 8 and coping with having to stay at home alone a lot by eating 3 gigantic bowls of sugary cereal at a time.

I can remember 2 months ago inhaling half a bag of Trader Joe’s macadamia nuts because I just couldn’t stop.

DIETING DOESN’T FIX THOSE ISSUES.

But you 100% CAN fix them, you just have to find your happy balance. 😌💜 Why? Because when you start realizing what you need to do to stop restricting in the first place 👉🏼 you can heal yourself (the WHOLE PERSON) and not just the food.

So I reflected on the things that helped me take my own wellness back. And researched (AND FOUND) the framework for the ✨FREE 2B NEW MINDSET FOOD HACK✨ Challenge.

The idea is not to do one thing perfectly – like eat the most “clean,” perfect diet – but rather to take care of yourself and looking after your physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual health.

Right this minute you can find the four guiding principles to true food freedom:

a breakthrough approach to weightloss,

a new way to look at food groups,

and start LOSING WEIGHT NOW!

And how to frame what you eat going forward so you never have to follow a diet again!

What does your Sunday Self Care Look Like?

Self care is 🙌🏻. I rocked my charcoal mask yesterday and had “girltime”. 😍❤️
.
Self care doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be perfect ambiance or even cost a lot of money. But …. it is so so so key.

image1 (6)

Gosh, I remember my Sunday nights did not look like this a few years back. Or feel like this.
.
Rewind two years ago, and we would be gearing up for being passing ships in sea, week after week. Tom going one direction all over southern California with any where from one to three nights away a lot of the weeks and I the opposite direction working long nights.
.
Thankful for this time. Thankful for being able to curate our life, our business, and moments like this, in a very different way.
.
A new week is upon us, what will you do to create your perfect Sundays? 🙌🏻❤️
